A Rushden Musician's War

A Rushden musician’s war   When her mother died in 2004, aged 102, her daughter Jean came across a battered suitcase full of letters that her father, George Warner, had sent home during his service as a dispatch rider with the Royal Army Service Core in the Second World War. George, who was the son of a Rushden shoemaker and born and brought up in the town, had written regularly to his wife, his ’Dearest Maudie’, during his four years abroad. Many of his letters never arrived but those that did, now battered and torn but mostly readable, have now been woven into a touching account of one local soldier’s war.  These recollections are woven skilfully into the story to give us glimpses of her mother and sister, and of George’s parents in Rushden with whom they lived for most of the war.                                                               Click here to read more
